Karolina Szymkiewicz|KAROLFUL
Visual Artist & Illustrator
Leeds
Karolina studied illustration at Edinburgh College of Art and graduated with a distinction from her Masters in 2011. In 2013 her work was shortlisted for the New Lights Exhibition, won the TIG Prize for most outstanding representational work, and was presented in The Mercer Gallery (Harrogate) and The Biscuit Factory (Newcastle). Karolina began 2014 with a residency for TASTE Shop (Shanghai), which led on to a sold-out exhibition entitled “MA”. Since returning to the UK she has completed further residencies, one of which was supported by East Street Arts and Northern School of Contemporary Dance (NSCD), culminating in a solo-exhibition, entitled ‘Pandora’s Box’, at Union 105 gallery (Leeds).
The principal theme within her work is the human body and how it conveys meaning through movement. This is reflected in her recurrent use of contemporary dance as an inspiration. She works collaboratively with professional dancers, translating the source material they provide her with into figurative representations. Her primary mediums of practice are pencil and digital drawing, which she then brings together using mixed media techniques.
