Sam Hodge
Painter & Printmaker
London
My work as an artist is deeply influenced my background in natural sciences, which I studied at Cambridge University and my subsequent training and work as a painting conservator. In 2007 I shifted towards making my own artwork, having my first solo exhibition at the Ada Street Gallery, London in 2009. In 2013 I was artist in residence at Chisenhale Art Space and in the Barbican as part of Hack the Barbican and was also short listed and exhibited at Pushing Print, in Margate. In 2014 I was an exhibitor at ManPower Festival in Lisbon.
I am concerned with the material processes of creation, both of the things that provide inspiration for my work and of the paintings and etchings themselves.
An example of this is my fascination with the emergence of complex patterns, such as crack networks, from simple physical processes. I am also exploring our reactions to the results from these material processes; the way we act as selectors, collectors and interpreters of images, making choices that give value to the selected and making connections that imbue the ambiguous with meaning.
