Sonja Wellings
Printmaker
Manchester
Sonja's background is in photography and painting but over the last 5 years she has been
exploring printmaking, completing a two year course of study under the guidance of Sean
Rorke, Artist Director at Hot Bed Press in Salford.
Although her photography has been used commercially over the years, she has only recently started to exhibit my printmaking. Recent exhibitions include the West Lancs Open in 2014 (receiving judges commendation) and group printmaking shows in the North West.
I work predominantly in the medium of printmaking. I use a range of techniques in my work including woodblock, collagraph, monoprint and occasionally screenprinting but I tend to favour etching, a unique mechanical process that lends itself to an experimental approach.
I work in a very spontaneous and experimental way and am interested in the element of
chance and accident. I often make etchings on plates that I have previously worked on and
discarded, working them back and building on the history of what has gone before. I seek to create balance and harmony in my work by applying order and structure to what is otherwise a very random and spontaneous process. My work is often reminiscent of nature and living organisms
